EE will upgrade six 4G sites across Dwyfor Meirionnydd by the end of 2021 as part of the Shared Rural Network (SRN) initiative to extend coverage in rural areas. The SRN is a programme between the UK’s four mobile network operators and the UK Government to extend 4G coverage to 95% of the UK’s geography by the middle of this decade.
The locations in Dwyfor Meirionnydd are Dinas Mawddwy, Beddgelert, Dolgellau, Llithfaen, Llandderfel and Dolbenmaen.
Charlie Evans, Welsh Conservative candidate for Dwyfor Meirionnydd at the Senedd Election said: “This is incredibly welcome news for Dwyfor Meirionnydd and it is because of the crucial cooperation between EE and UK Government. It is just the latest news that shows the benefit of Wales being part of the United Kingdom, following initiatives such as the Job Retention Scheme and the UK’s vaccination program.
“Dwyfor Meirionnydd has a chronic lack of opportunity- with our young people having to leave to pursue education and employment elsewhere. We need to seize the real benefits of technology on 4G, 5G and fibre optic broadband to get new start-ups established which will help retain our talent, and establish well-paid jobs for working people across Gwynedd.”
Simon Hart MP, Secretary of State for Wales said: “Improvements to digital connectivity in Wales are central to the UK Governments levelling up agenda.
“We are committed to boosting Wales’ digital infrastructure and the work between the network operators and the UK Government on the Shared Rural Network has seen major improvements in many rural areas, bringing significant benefits to individuals and businesses."
Mr Evans continued: “Constituents are contacting me with concerns that BT however are pushing back timetables on getting areas setup for superfast broadband. As Dwyfor Meirionnydd’s Member of the Senedd, I can ensure you I will not rest until there are no “not-spot” areas left in the constituency.”
